History of Pier 39
Pier 39 was constructed at the beginning of San Francisco’s development boom opening October 4, 1978. Founder and Entrepreneur Warren Simmons who wanted to build an entertainment center for visitors to the San Francisco area. Pier 39 quickly became a success attracting visitors from all around the world to today being the third most visited attraction in the U.S. The ever popular sea lions arrived in January 1990 and took over K Dock. As a protected species these adorable marine creatures took up residence and became plentiful reaching up to 1,017 at one point. These sea creatures alone have created quite an allure for many worldwide tourists and continue to thrive on the K Dock of pier 39. San Francisco is rich in historical landmarks and breathtaking scenery some of which can be viewed from pier 39 including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. Pier 39 is now part of San Francisco’s cultural fabric and adds to the vibrancy of the city.
