Points of Sailing

AC Sailing SF » Points of Sailing

This diagram shows the fundamental points of sailing. While all sail boats are governed by the same principle that it’s impossible to head directly into the wind, IACC yachts like USA 76 are able to sail closer to the wind than any other.

“Close Hauled” is where USA 76 is most impressive, using her huge sail area and righting moment to storm uphill. Due to Coast Guard regulations USA 76 is unable to carry downwind specific sails like a spinnaker or gennaker, however she is still a magnificent yacht to sail on a “Beam Reach” or a “Broad Reach”. With the boat fully powered up and spray flying, there are very few boats on the Bay that can keep up.
